AHMEDNAGAR FORT
Ahmednagar Fort was initially built by Ahmed Nizam Shah of Ahmednagar in the year 1490 AD to commemorate victory over Bahmani General Jahangir Khan. It was the Royal residence (Kotbagh Nizam) and administrative Centre for Nizamshah Dynasty. Fort was rebuilt by Hussain Nizam Shah during 1559 – 1562 AD. The fort is a peculiarly well planned, well built ‘Bhuikot’ fort as though lying on ground. Portuguese Engineers are said to have helped to build a wall and Bastions of this fort. The fort is oval in form and about 2 Kms. It has 22 bastions and a moat. Originally it had two entrances, one on the west side (Hatti Darwaza) for wheeled traffic and second entrance on east side for the foot passengers, in the form of Chain suspension bridge. A victim of countless invasions, the fort has taken many blows and come out relatively unscathed. Prince Murad, son of Emperor Akbar, attacked the fort in 1595 – 1596 AD. This attack was bravely repulsed by Sultana Chandbibi. In 1600 AD Akbar dispatched Prince Daniel who laid siege to the fort. Chandbibi decided to negotiate terms with Daniel which was not liked by some of her nobles and as a matter of fact she was forced to death. The fort remained with Mughals till 1759 and with Marathas till 1803, aftermath it was captured by General Wellesley. Even though the fort is under military’s command, it is declared as a tourist place. (Open on all days, Distance – 2.5 Kms from Maliwada bus stand.)
